European Indoor Athletics Championships 2007 – Opening & Closing Ceremonies
Working collaboratively with a team of artists from various disciplines, dna3d developed the overall concept, structure, form and aesthetic for both Opening and Closing ceremonies of the 2007 European Indoor Athletics Championships held at Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena.
The Opening Ceremony focused on the athletic components of Higher, Faster, Stronger and involved a cast of over 140 uniquely talented performers. Described as where the classical beauty of the ballet dancer meets the urban aesthetic and physicality of the parkour free runner, where the speed and dexterity of online skaters and wheel chair athletes challenge the power, agility and gymnastic ability of the capoeira warrior, and all exist to pursue the aim of achieving their personal best.
The overall form of the ceremony embraced the qualities of speed, endurance, agility, strength, stamina, height and distance; the type of skills, expertise and talent attributed to all track and field athletes, and featured emerging young talent from the world of dance, physical performance and music.
The Closing Ceremony, entitled “The Medal,” acknowledged and celebrated the many qualities exhibited not only by each participating athlete but by everyone united in staging a “Championship,” and featured a poem specially written and performed by Birmingham’s Junior Poet Laureate.
